How your European move works
A clear, structured process keeps a move abroad on track.
How long a European move takes
Road freight is usually the quickest way to move to Europe, and it is how most of our European moves travel. Actual timings depend on your destination, the route and how quickly customs clears, so rather than quote a blanket figure, we give you a realistic schedule after your survey.
Insured door to door
Your move is fully insured for the journey, with cover up to £100,000. Because international cover depends on your route and what is being shipped, we explain exactly what is included before you book, so there are no surprises.
Export packing standards
Belongings heading to Europe are packed to export standard, using heavy-duty materials built for long road journeys and handling at both ends. Fragile and high-value items get extra protection.
Everything is logged on a detailed inventory, which also supports your customs paperwork. Add full or part packing services if you would like us to handle all of it.

Documentation and customs
Since the UK left the EU, moving your belongings to a European country means customs formalities at both ends. In practice that usually means a detailed, valued inventory of everything you are shipping, plus the import paperwork your destination country requires.
Most European countries let you bring personal belongings in without import duty or VAT when you are transferring your main home, provided you meet that country’s conditions. Those conditions, the forms involved and any time limits are set by the destination country and do change, so we confirm the current requirements for your move and prepare the documentation with our destination partners.
Survey, quote and what affects the cost
Every European move starts with a survey, so your quote is based on your actual move rather than a guess. We assess what is going, your destination and your timeline, then come back with clear pricing.
What affects the cost of a European move:
- The volume you are shipping, as shipping less keeps costs down
- Your destination and the distance
- Access at both ends, including stairs, parking and any long carries
- Whether you want full or part packing
- Whether you need storage before departure
- The time of year and how much notice you can give
We explain your quote in full, with no waiting-time charges.
Storage before departure
If your move date and your departure do not line up, we can store your belongings before they travel. Use our storage at our own Essex facility, or combine both with our removals and storage service, so nothing has to leave before you are ready.
If you are keeping a base in the UK as well, we also handle house removals at this end.
